Inside Track
The National Congress of State Games is seeking bids to host the 2023 and 2025 State Games of America, the biennial national competition for participants ranging in age from 5 to over age 80. The 2019 event in Lynchburg, Virginia, had 12,000 participants from 48 different states in 35 sports. Facility requirements include multiple sheets of ice, a 50-meter pool, eight-lane track-and-field facility, indoor facilities for basketball, volleyball and pickleball, fields for baseball, softball, soccer and additional competition space. An Opening Ceremony event must take place as well that includes specific elements, such as an athlete parade and lighting of the cauldron. Previous locations for the ceremony have included Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego and Memorial Stadium at the University of Nebraska. Past events have generated over 5,000 room nights.
