Event History: Since 1936, when the NFL held its first player draft, more than 10,000 of the best college players in the country have been drafted. The original plan called for teams to select eligible college players in inverse order of the teams’ finish in the previous season’s standings. It wasn’t until 1980 that the fledgling ESPN network asked to broadcast the draft live. Reportedly, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle didn’t believe it would be entertaining, but agreed anyway. Since then, the event has grown into a three-day extravaganza, hosting thousands of fans and garnering coverage internationally.
