Downtown Buffalo’s new HarborCenter secured its street cred as a hockey destination with a successful run hosting the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship in January. And the event may have bolstered Buffalo’s case to host the 2018 World Junior Championship, a tournament Buffalo hosted in 2011, drawing a U.S. record crowd estimated at 330,000.

If the recent women’s event was an audition, it was considered a rousing success. “They certainly did an excellent job and know what goes into an event like this,” said Dave Fischer, senior director of communications for USA Hockey. He added, however, that his organization has received interest from a number of strong candidates to host the upcoming junior championships. USA Hockey expects to make its choice in the summer or fall.
