Bidding Opens for 2020, 2022 Olympic Winter Games

The International Olympic Committee has opened the bidding process for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, as well as the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

The Winter Youth Olympic Games, which will be the third one held, is open to youth ages 15–18, competing in seven sports. Non-athlete participants, such as youth reporters, ambassadors and athlete role models are also integral parts of the event. The deadline to bid for the event is November 28, 2013. The winning city will be announced in May or June 2015.

The bidding process for the Olympic Winter Games will feature two phases—the candidature acceptance procedure and the candidature procedure—and conclude with the election of the host city during the 127th IOC Session, to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, July 31, 2015. The deadline to bid is November 14, 2013.

Phase I involves a thorough review by the IOC of each city’s potential to organize the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. Cities will be asked to reply to a questionnaire, and their answers will be studied by the IOC to help the IOC Executive Board select the cities that will move on to Phase II as candidate cities. The questionnaire to which the applicant cities must respond, as well as all relevant information and deadlines related to the first phase of the 2022 bid process, can be found in the 2022 Candidature Acceptance Procedure.

Each National Olympic Committee can nominate one city to enter for both events.
