LA28 Finalizes Sailing Competition Sites
Port of Los Angeles and Belmont Shore in Long Beach will each host events
Posted On: July 1, 2025 By :The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games have announced the finalized sailing venue plan, which will include events at both the Port of Los Angeles and Belmont Shore in Long Beach.
“After close coordination with the cities of Los Angeles and Long Beach, along with collaboration from World Sailing, we are excited about the opportunity to utilize two of the best locations along the Pacific coastline for sailing competitions in 2028,” said LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover.
The Port of Los Angeles will host six boat events: Men’s and Women’s Dinghy, Men’s and Women’s Skiff, Mixed Dinghy and Mixed Multihull. Belmont Shore will host four board events: Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing and Men’s and Women’s Kite.
Belmont Shore and the Port of Los Angeles are located within LA28’s larger Games Plan. To optimize viewership opportunities for the sport, the events will be staged consecutively with the boards first up at Belmont Shore in Long Beach, followed by the boat racing portion of the sailing competition in Port of Los Angeles. The two venues are approximately 10 miles from each other.
“Belmont Shore in Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles will provide wonderful sailing conditions which will give all our athletes a platform to demonstrate the skill, athleticism and strategic thinking required to succeed in our sport,” said David Graham, CEO of World Sailing. “We look forward to the work ahead with LA28 and the IOC, plus our national federations and sailors to deliver some truly world-class sport in 2028.”
Both areas have previous Olympic experience when it comes to sailing. During the 1932 Olympics, the Port of Los Angeles hosted sailing at its Outer Harbor, and at the 1984 Games, Long Beach hosted sailing.
“Sailing has a long history in our city and San Pedro will shine on the world stage,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. “We look forward to welcoming the world’s best sailors to compete in these exciting events.”
“Long Beach is the premiere location for windsurfing and kite — two outstanding sailing events that will captivate spectators,” added Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson. “We hosted sailing competitions during the 1984 Olympic Games, and we cannot wait to continue our legacy and show our beautiful coastline to the world once again in 2028.”
