A proposed new stadium for the New England Revolution has moved a step closer after the franchise’s owner the Kraft Group announced that it had reached agreements with the cities of Boston and Everett, Massachusetts, for the long-term transformation of an industrial site along the Mystic River in Everett.

Located on the site of a former power plant, across from the Encore Boston Harbor Casino, the stadium is initially anticipated to have a capacity of around 25,000 seats. As well as serving as a home for the MLS team, it is also expected to host concerts and include a public waterfront park to benefit the local community.

“The Kraft Group has reached agreements with the cities of Everett and Boston, marking an important milestone in our effort to transform a long‑neglected industrial site along the Mystic River into a vibrant, publicly accessible waterfront destination and the future home of the New England Revolution,” read a statement by The Kraft Group. “These agreements reflect years of collaboration with city leaders and community stakeholders to ensure the project delivers meaningful, lasting benefits for residents while addressing transportation, environmental, and municipal impacts.

“We are especially grateful for Mayor Carlo DeMaria’s leadership and vision. At its core, this is an investment in Everett and its future. In addition, it provides improved access and an enhanced neighborhood experience by removing a physical and visual barrier for the residents of Charlestown and we appreciate Mayor Michelle Wu and her team’s partnership.”

Infrastructure Improvements and Enhancements

Under the agreements, the Kraft Group says that it will also invest in traffic and transportation improvements, enhancements in new and existing infrastructure, strengthening pedestrian and bicycle connectivity, and expanding local employment opportunities.

The deal will see the ownership group pay the city of Boston a community benefits package of almost $48 million across the next 15 years, including an immediate $1.5 million community impact payment once the permit is issued. In addition, annual payments of $300,000 and 15 annual payments of $333,000 will be made to support transformation infrastructure improvements, and at least $5 million is being committed to enhancing safety and access to roadways, bike paths, intersections and transit facilities.

At the same time, Boston will be paid $1 for each soccer match ticket sold and 1.5 percent of all concert tickets sold at the venue in perpetuity. It is estimated that this will generate $34 million for the city over the first 15 years that the stadium is in active use.

While negotiations had been ongoing, local officials and residents previously raised concerns that the construction of a new stadium would drive increased traffic congestion and negative environmental impacts. Through the latest stadium proposals, The Kraft Group is trying to mitigate those concerns by transforming the site into a community asset for citizens in Everett.

There is currently no timeline for the opening of the proposed stadium, however an FAQ section on the City of Everett website indicated that there would be a four-year timeline from the start of the demolition to the completion of the new venue.

Along with the New England Patriots, the New England Revolution currently plays at the multi-purpose Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, which has a seating capacity of more than 64,000. Both franchises are owned by Robert Kraft and the Kraft Group.
