Episode #151
Posted On: September 11, 2026 By :
For years, the state of Maine has had a sports commission. And for years, the public face of that organization has been Sheila Brennan Nee. The efforts to get a dedicated sports marketing effort in Maine are similar to the launches in other states. But the glue has been Brennan Nee, who was involved in those early formation efforts and has more or less led the charge to bring sports events to destinations across the state.
Brennan Nee recently announced that she would retire from the position at the end of this year after 11 years guiding the effort. In this conversation, SportsTravel Publisher Jason Gewirtz sits down with her to talk about how that journey began, those initial early wins and what advice she has for the next generation of sports tourism professionals.
Among the topics discussed:
- Building the Maine Sports Commission
- Overcoming Maine’s Geographic Challenges
- Memorable Sports Events in the State
- Supporting Women in Sports
- The Power of Relationships
- Advice for New Professionals in the Industry
