UK Government Pledges $1.2 Billion for Sports Events and Facilities
Most of the money will go toward Euro 2028 and other major internaitonal events
Posted On: June 23, 2025 By :The British Government has pledged to spend approximately $1.2 billion (USD) on major sporting events and facilities to be built around the country as part of a ‘Plan for Change’ announced by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy.
More than half of that total will support proposed hosting of events such as the 2028 European Championships in soccer that will be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland; the 2027 Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes and the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
“We welcome the Government’s ongoing commitment to hosting the Tour De France, Tour De France Femmes and Euro 2028,” UK Sport Chair Nick Webborn said. “These events have huge potential to drive economic growth, bring people together and inspire the next generation in communities across the UK.”
England will host the World Rugby Women’s World Cup this summer and the 2026 Commonwealth Games are headed to Glasgow. The UK is all but ensured to host the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup as well.
The government also said money would be invested in “new and upgraded grassroots sport facilities in communities across the country” over the next four years.
