2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Draw Set for December 11 in Rio de Janeiro

The Final Draw for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil will be held on December 11 at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, also known as MAM Rio.

The event will bring together representatives of all of the qualified teams, as well as those still in contention via the Play-Off Tournament, which will be contested in February. The draw will determine the groups and competitive pathways for the competing nations in the first FIFA Women’s World Cup edition ever to be played in South America.

It comes just a week after FIFA unveiled the full match schedule for the tournament. Eight host cities (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília, Porto Alegre, Recife, Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, and Salvador) will host 64 matches from June 24 through July 25, 2027, with the legendary Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro selected to host both host nation Brazil’s opening group-stage match and the final.

Founded in 1948, MAM Rio is situated on the shores of Guanabara Bay in Flamengo Park, west of Santos Dumont Park. The museum was designed by renowned architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy and is surrounded by gardens created by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx.

The choice of venue was symbolic, celebrating Brazil’s rich artistic heritage and the creativity, imagination and expression that characterize the country’s relationship with soccer. Meanwhile, the tournament’s branding also features artwork created by female Brazilian artists for each of the eight host cities.

Over 1,000 guests are expected to attend the Final Draw on December 11, with the exact time of the live draw show to be announced at a later date. Once the draw has concluded, FIFA will finalize and publish a final, updated version of the match schedule, with confirmed host city allocations and kick-off times.

“The FIFA Women’s World Cup showcases the very best players in the world, and there’s no better place to begin drawing their paths through the tournament in Brazil than a venue that celebrates creativity and human expression,” said FIFA Chief Football Officer Jill Ellis.

“Hosting the final draw at MAM Rio is a powerful way to celebrate our futebol arte identity,” stated Aline Pellegrino, the executive director of legacy & stakeholder affairs at the Local FIFA Subsidiary in Brazil.

Competing Nations

The tournament will feature 32 nations for the second time, with six direct slots for AFC (Asia), four direct slots each for CAF (Africa) and Concacaf (North and Central America), four direct slots for CONMEBOL (South America), one direct slot for OFC (Oceania), and 11 direct slots for UEFA (Europe).

As the host country, Brazil is already confirmed as an automatic qualifier. So far, 17 other countries have secured a spot in the tournament: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, Malawi, Morocco, New Zealand, North Korea, Philippines, South Korea, and Spain.

The final three teams to qualify will be decided via the Play-Off Tournament, which will be staged in a centralized location in February 2027.

The United States, which has won a record four Women’s World Cups, has not yet qualified but can do so this fall via the Concacaf W Championship in Texas. All the semifinalists of that eight-team event are ensured a spot in the Women’s World Cup.

Spain is the reigning champion, having defeated England 1-0 in the 2023 finals, hosted by Australia and New Zealand, to win its first Women’s World Cup title.

It will also be the final edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup to feature 32 teams, before it expands to 48 teams in 2031. That edition will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica, and will adopt the same 12-group format as the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup.

Tickets

The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup is expected to become the most-attended edition of the competition to date. Almost two million tickets were sold for the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023, breaking the previous record by around 600,000.

So far, more than 800,000 people have already registered an interest in securing tickets for next summer’s edition, while over 95,000 have expressed a desire to volunteer during the event.
