Ahmedabad to Host Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030
It will become the second city in India to stage the Commonwealth Games
Posted On: December 2, 2025 By :Ahmedabad has been confirmed as the host city for the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
The western city in India was recommended over a rival bid by Abuja in Nigeria by an evaluation panel last month. The decision was formally ratified by the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories at a 2025 general assembly in Glasgow last week.
Marking 100 years since the inaugural edition in Hamilton, Canada, the 2030 Games will operate under a streamlined model due to rising costs. As a result, there will be fewer sports and athletes, while the event will mostly use existing infrastructure.
Ahmedabad will be the second city in India to stage the Commonwealth Games, following in Delhi’s footsteps in 2010. It is expected to lay the foundations for a potential bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.
“The 2030 Games will not only celebrate 100 years of the Commonwealth Movement, but also lay the foundations for the next century,” said Indian Commonwealth Games Associate President P.T. Usha.
The Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad in 2030 will mirror next year’s event in Glasgow, which has also been scaled back in terms of sports and athletes. Glasgow stepped in to host after Victoria in Australia withdrew from its hosting responsibilities last year, citing rising costs.
Commonwealth Sport has already revealed that Ahmedabad 2030 will include between 15 and 17 sports. Sports that are guaranteed inclusion so far include athletics, aquatics, artistic gymnastics, bowls, boxing, netball, table tennis and weightlifting, and the full lineup will be confirmed later this year after a consultation period.
Sports that may still feature include archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, T20 cricket, triathlon, 3×3 wheelchair and wrestling. Hosts are also able to propose an additional two sports.
Existing infrastructure with specific upgrades will mainly be used, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and the Gujarat Police Academy, while a new athletics stadium and shooting range are in the pipeline. Construction is expected for completion by early 2029.
Ahmedabad recently hosted the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, the Asian Swimming Championships and AFC Under-17 Asian Cup qualifiers. In 2026, it will also be the host city for the Asian Weightlifting Championships and the Asian Para Archery Cup.
