The 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field will return to Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, June 17-22, 2028, where the nation’s top track and field athletes will compete for places on Team USA at the LA28 Olympic Summer Games.
The 2028 edition will mark the sixth consecutive U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field to be held in Eugene. The meet will again be organized by Eugene-based nonprofit TrackTown USA.
Eugene has been the site of every U.S. Olympic track and field team trials since 2008, while Hayward Field has hosted the USATF Outdoor Championships 10 times, most recently in 2025, and will do so again in 2027.
The announcement comes on the heels of the World Athletics U20 Championships, which welcomed more than 1,500 athletes from more than 140 countries to Eugene. The city also hosted the 2022 World Athletics Championships — the first and only time that the event has been held in the United States.
“TrackTown USA and Eugene’s record of success in selecting America’s best track and field athletes speaks for itself in the 52 Olympic gold medals U.S. athletes have won since 2008,” said Max Siegel, CEO of USA Track & Field, the national governing body for track and field, long distance running, and race walking in the United States. “There is no doubt these Trials will produce a team that is built for L.A.”
“TrackTown USA is honored to welcome back the nation’s best athletes, coaches, and fans to Hayward Field at The University of Oregon for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field,” said TrackTown USA CEO Michael Reilly. “Our community looks forward to hosting an amazing celebration of the sport and the world’s number one team.”
New Competition Format
The 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field will feature a new six-day competition format, a reduction from eight days in previous editions. The schedule was revised following consultation with athletes who expressed a preference for a more efficient selection process, particularly with the Trials taking place less than a month before the Olympic Games.
Team selection for the decathlon, heptathlon, and 10,000 meters will also be held earlier in the spring to allow additional recovery time before the Games.
The date and location for those competitions will be announced in due course, while qualifying standards and qualifying windows will be confirmed in 2027. Qualifying for the LA28 Paralympic Summer Games will also be revealed at a later date.
Earlier this year, USA Track & Field and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced that St. Louis will host the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon on March 25, 2028.
The 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field will be broadcast on NBC, Peacock, and NBCSN.
