In addition, the country will host the 19th edition of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in 2027, bringing another FIBA continental competition to El Salvador.

The FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup brings together the best men’s and women’s national teams from across the Americas in a continental competition, with equal participation of men’s and women’s teams competing alternately on the same court.

Since the first edition, in the men’s competition, the United States has claimed four titles, while Puerto Rico have lifted the trophy once. In the women’s competition, the United States has secured three gold medals, with Canada winning two championships.

“We are pleased to bring the FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup to El Salvador for the 2026 and 2027 editions,” said Alex Sanchez, FIBA 3×3 managing director. “Hosting the competition in consecutive years provides continuity for the event on the continental calendar, and we would like to thank Federación Salvadoreña de Baloncesto for its cooperation and commitment in supporting the delivery of these editions as we continue to develop 3×3 basketball across the Americas.”

“Hosting both the FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup in 2026 and 2027 and the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2027 shows El Salvador’s real commitment to basketball in the region,” said FIBA Americas Executive Director Carlos Alves. “Investing in regional competitions strengthens our national federations, gives athletes more opportunities to compete at a high level, and brings the game closer to fans. We are proud to see El Salvador take this step and play a leading role in the growth of basketball across the Americas.”

“Bringing the FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup 2026 and 2027 to El Salvador is a tremendous honor for our nation,” said Yamil Bukele, FIBA Central Board member and director of the National Institute of Sports of El Salvador. “Welcoming the best 3×3 basketball teams in the Americas — including Olympians and World Cup medalists — reflects our commitment to elevating the discipline and showcasing El Salvador on the global stage. This event marks an important step in the development of 3×3 basketball and in the continued promotion of our country.”

Origins and Growth of 3×3

3×3 was inspired by several forms of streetball played around the world and is considered to be one of the most popular global urban team sports. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court.

It was played for the first time in international competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, and since then, it has seen the launch of a yearly professional circuit for men and women (World Tour and Women’s Series respectively) and national-team competitions. The sport also made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
