Indianapolis to Host 2024 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials
Event will be at Lucas Oil Stadium in temporary pool
Posted On: March 29, 2022 By :Indianapolis will host the 2024 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts — the first time the event will be staged in a football stadium.
The official announcement was made Tuesday in Indianapolis by city officials and USA Swimming executives.
“From day one, I truly believed that there was no bigger, more exciting, everything-on-the-line Olympic event in this country than the Swimming Trials and envisioned the heights that we could take it to,” USA Swimming President and Chief Executive Officer Tim Hinchey said. “Given their track record, we are incredibly confident and excited in Indianapolis’ ability to conduct a technically flawless competition and to stage a world-class event. We are also proud of Indiana Sports Corp’s commitment to partnering with us in giving back to the local community and leaving a legacy far beyond our nine-day meet.”
While the city previously hosted the trials four times at the IU Natatorium on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, the 2024 Trials will be at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts. The trials will have a seating capacity of 30,000 to 35,000 and will be formatted in the same design as when the city hosted the NCAA Men’s Final Four. Three temporary pools — two 50-meter and one 25-meter — will be installed over the field.

Indianapolis first hosted the trials in 1924 and overall have hosted it six times, most recently in 2000. Indianapolis also hosted the 2004 World Short Course Swimming Championships at then-Bankers Life Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers. The Olympic Trials in diving were at the IUPUI Natatorium in 2021, the seventh time it hosted that event.
The other finalists were Omaha, Minneapolis, and St. Louis. Omaha had hosted the trials since 2008 at the Chi Health Center, which seats over 18,000. Past events had an economic impact of $75 million for the Omaha region.
