New York Road Runners Announces First New Jersey Race
Posted On: January 28, 2019 By :New York Road Runners will host its first race outside the city’s five boroughs with the launch of the NYRR Newport Fiesta 5K, in the Newport area of downtown Jersey City, New Jersey. The race will be staged on May 4. As part of the event, NYRR will host open runs and free youth programs throughout the year.
“Our growth into New Jersey provides the opportunity for New York Road Runners to reach the thousands of dedicated runners who regularly participate in our premier races as well as reach new and diverse audiences,” said Michael Capiraso, NYRR president and CEO. “In addition, NYRR is excited to bring youth and community programming to positively impact local runners of all ages and abilities.”
NYRR organizes more than 50 races annually, including the TCS New York City Marathon. In 2018, nearly 30,000 finishers of the organization’s events lived in New Jersey. And among those finishers, nearly 40 percent live within a 10-mile radius of Jersey City, making the city across the Hudson River from New York a natural fit for a new event.
“The city’s partnership with NYRR will bring together members of our city in an active, healthy way, without having to cross the Hudson River,” said Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop. “Not only will the city host the Newport Fiesta 5K, but NYRR will bring year-round initiatives and races to the city that are of no cost for residents and runners of all ages to participate in.”
NYRR also announced that it will grow its national youth program, Rising New York Road Runners, in New Jersey. The program serves nearly 250,000 youth nationwide annually and provides free, innovative programming designed to motivate youth to run. The program is offered to nearly 20 schools in New Jersey, although the program will now be expanding.
