The 2026 Finalissima, scheduled to be played on March 27 in Qatar between UEFA EURO 2024 winner Spain and CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 champion Argentina, has been canceled due to the conflict in the Middle East, as well as rescheduling issues regarding the timing and host venue of the match.
The one-off match every four years is the result of a partnership between UEFA and CONMEBOL which began in 2022 with the inaugural Finalissima between Argentina and Italy at London’s Wembley Stadium, which the former won 3-0.
Because of the ongoing political tension in the Middle East, it was deemed that the match could no longer be held as planned at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar this month due to safety and security reasons. UEFA said that it explored “other feasible alternatives” to still stage the match, but it added that “each ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentinian Football Association.”
The first option was to potentially host the match at Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid on the same planned date with a 50:50 split between supporters of Argentina and Spain. However, the AFA refused the proposal, saying that a home venue for Spain would give its opponents an unfair advantage.
The second option was to stage the Finalissima over two legs – one at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 27 and the other in Buenos Aires during an international window before the next UEFA EURO and Copa America editions in 2028, but this was also rejected.
UEFA said that it had sought a commitment from Argentina that, if a neutral venue in Europe could be found, the game could go ahead on March 27, as planned, or on the alternative date of March 30. This proposal was also turned down.
In response, Argentina made a counter suggestion to play the game after the 2026 FIFA World Cup but, as Spain has no available dates, that option had to be ruled out. UEFA said that the AFA had stated that the national team could only play the Finalissima on March 31, but this date ultimately proved to be unworkable.
“It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organizers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams of the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar,” said UEFA in a statement. “UEFA would like to express its deep gratitude to the organizing committee and relevant authorities of Qatar for the work that has been put into trying to host the game and its certainty that peace will return to the region soon.”
Middle East Sports Event Disruption
Since the war between the United States, Iran, Israel and other neighboring nations in the Middle East got underway last month, all sporting events in Iran have been called off until further notice, including the country’s Persian Gulf Pro League, while Formula One races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have also been canceled.
In the meantime, the ooredoo Qatar Major, organized by Premier Padel and the International Padel Federation, and which was originally scheduled for April 6–11 in Doha, has been postponed.
