Lucas Oil Stadium, home to the Indianapolis Colts, will again serve as the host venue after USA Swimming took the event to a football stadium for the first time after years staging the competition in an arena setting. The trials will serve as the sole selection meet for U.S. athletes looking to represent Team USA at the 2028 Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles.
“The Olympic Trials are unlike any other event in our sport — they represent the pinnacle of competition, emotion and national pride,” said USA Swimming Interim Chief Executive Officer Bob Vincent. “Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Stadium provide the perfect venue to prepare our athletes and coaches for the scale of the LA28 Games at SoFi stadium. We are proud to partner again with the Indiana Sports Corp and the city of Indianapolis. Securing our host location now allows us to build training plans with confidence and best prepares our athletes to dominate the next three years.”
For the 2028 event, three temporary pools – one 50-meter competition pool and two warm-up pools – will be installed over the field in Lucas Oil Stadium. The Indiana Convention Center, connected to the stadium, will serve as home for USA Swimming’s Toyota Aqua Zone, a fan activation area. USA Swimming House, a hospitality hub, is also expected to return and the NGB and the Indiana Sports Corp intend to create a citywide festival throughout the event to celebrate the sport of swimming.
“We are thrilled to welcome the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming back to Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Stadium in 2028,” said Indiana Sports Corp President Patrick Talty. “The 2024 Trials epitomized our mission of impacting the community through sports and showcased, once again, why Indy is the best host city in the country. We’re grateful to USA Swimming and USOPC for the continued partnership and the opportunity to host this event. We look forward to all lanes returning to Indy in 2028.”
The organizations will also recommit to the ongoing Legacy Projects created in 2024, which will support local programs and facilities with the resources and guidance to promote swimming and the life-saving skills of water safety.
The 2024 Olympic Trials broke attendance records with over 285,000 fans across all sessions, a 60 percent increase over previous trials. Live primetime coverage from the nine nights on NBC was up 20 percent over 2021 and the event generated more than $132 million in estimated economic impact for the city of Indianapolis. The event won the 2024 SportsTravel Award for Best Amateur Sporting Event.
Before Indianapolis, the event was staged for four Olympic cycles in an arena in Omaha, Nebraska, from 2008 through 2021. In 2004, the event was staged in a temporary venue in a parking lot in Long Beach, California. Before that, the trials were traditionally held in a natatorium, including several editions in Indianapolis.
