FIFA has published the first official version of the Team Base Camp brochure for the 32 national teams that will qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The first version of the brochure, which has been shared with all Member Associations still in contention to qualify for next year’s tournament, features 38 training sites across Brazil, and all have been paired with accommodation facilities.
Next year will mark the second and final edition of the tournament to be contested by 32 teams, with the 2031 edition set to be expanded to feature 48 teams — the same current figure as for the men’s tournament. The 2031 edition will be hosted by Mexico and the United States, with a small number of games to also be held in Costa Rica and Jamaica.
Brazil was awarded the right to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in May 2024, defeating a joint bid by Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.
The 10th edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup next year will be the first to be held in South America. Meanwhile, Brazil will also join Sweden, the United States, Germany, France and Canada as the only countries to host both the men’s and women’s tournaments.
Selection Process
Undertaking an “extensive and rigorous” base camp inspection process, five rounds of inspection visits took place between November 2024 and March 2026, with the final round focusing on evaluating 42 pitches across nine cities to assess whether they met FIFA’s strict standards for tournaments.
Over the course of a year and a half, FIFA’s technical experts visited 52 cities in 19 Brazilian states and reviewed 261 locations. According to the association, São Paulo emerged with the most extensive range of options, with 45 locations inspected across 17 cities in the state.
The aim of the experts was to ensure that optimal training site and accommodation arrangements will be provided across the country.
Following the visits, the FIFA team compiled information on the 38 training sites paired with an accommodation facility. The sites will be offered to national teams for use during the tournament and the brochure will allow Member Associations to accelerate their planning.
A second version will be published in due course and include further facilities.
The qualified teams will then be able to select their Team Base Camp options after the Final Draw has been held and the match schedule has been finalized. No date has yet been announced for the Final Draw but the match schedule is likely to be finalized from February 2027 onward after the final remaining teams have qualified via various playoffs.
“This is a significant moment, and we’re pleased to present this brochure to the teams who have already qualified and those still in contention,” said Rhiannon Martin, head of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. “Our aim is to ensure that the teams who earn their place in Brazil are rewarded with world-class training sites and the facilities needed to help players perform at their very best level on the global stage.”
2014 Legacy
FIFA says it wants to reinforce the legacy of the 2014 Men’s World Cup that was hosted in Brazil by selecting 12 training sites that were also used as base camps 12 years ago for the men’s tournament.
“The investments made for the 2014 FIFA World Cup have ensured that Brazil now has a strong inventory of sustainable, good-quality facilities,” added Martin. “The lasting impact on football infrastructure has been benefiting the host nation and the sport as a whole, and we’re delighted to be able to offer these facilities at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.”
2027 Host Cities
Eight venues across eight different host cities have been selected to host matches at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup:
- Belo Horizonte – Estádio Mineirão
- Brasília – Estádio Nacional
- Fortaleza – Arena Castelão
- Porto Alegre – Estádio Beira-Rio
- Recife – Arena de Pernambuco
- Rio de Janeiro – Estádio do Maracanã
- Salvador – Arena Fonte Nova
- São Paulo – Arena Itaquera
So far, Brazil (hosts), Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, the Philippines and New Zealand have all confirmed their qualification for the World Cup.
The United States has won the most Women’s World Cup titles (four) to date, ahead of Germany (two), Japan, Norway and Spain (all one).
The 2027 tournament will take place from June 24 through July 25, 2027.
2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup Brochure Lessons
Not all base camps have been announced for this year’s men’s World Cup, but inspecting them has been the most significant such undertaking in FIFA’s history. The 2026 tournament will be the first FIFA World Cup (men’s or women’s) to feature 48 teams after its expansion from 32 teams, and the first to include 16 host cities and three host nations.
In the initial versions of the 2026 Team Base Camp Brochure, 64 options for 48 participating teams were announced. This gave the teams a selection of base camps from which they would travel to their group stage matches and where players, staff and officials would spend the majority of their time during the tournament.
Teams submitted their selections for base camps following the Final Draw in December, with teams picking base camp locations in accordance with their FIFA world ranking. A key factor for teams to consider when selecting a base camp was where they have their matches, but they may still opt for different base camps in the latter stages of the tournament should they progress and their games are being played a long distance away from their initial hub.
Despite FIFA releasing the brochure, national teams are not obliged to select any of the options provided to them.
One such example is Germany, the first 2026 qualified nation to select a base camp, which chose Winston-Salem, North Carolina, as its official training site and team headquarters. The base camp, which includes a training site at Wake Forest’s W. Dennie Spry Soccer Stadium and accommodation at The Gravlyn Estate, was not in FIFA’s original catalog but was chosen specifically by Germany for its privacy, elite training facilities and proximity to stadiums.
The German Men’s National Team will play in Houston, Toronto and New York/New Jersey during the group stage.
