Commonwealth Games 2026 Preview: An Uncertain New Era

The Commonwealth Games enter an uncertain new era this week, as Glasgow, Scotland, gets set to stage the 23rd edition of the event. It joins a special club of Auckland, New Zealand, and Edinburgh, Scotland in hosting the event on two occasions, 12 years after its last time as a host.

The 2026 event, taking place from July 23 through August 2, was originally awarded to the Australian state of Victoria, but the state government withdrew three years ago due to escalating projected costs. In stepped Glasgow just over a year later, although it came under the premise that these would be a “reimagined, scaled-down” version of the Games, with fewer events and venues.

It is not the first time that a designated host city of the Commonwealth Games, which began as The British Empire Games in 1930, has withdrawn or been stripped of its hosting duties: Durban in South Africa was replaced by Birmingham, UK, for the 2022 Games over financial challenges; Malaysia declined to host the 2026 edition before Glasgow was selected due to the tight organizational timescale; and Alberta, Canada, stepped away from hosting in 2030 before Ahmedabad, India, was selected as the host city. The only time that the Games were canceled was during the Second World War.

Ahead of its 23rd edition, SportsTravel previews the Commonwealth Games 2026 and analyzes what the future could hold for the event:

Commonwealth Games Format

The Commonwealth Games are a multi-sport event that takes place every four years, between each Olympic and Paralympic cycle. The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 56 independent member countries across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, Europe and the Pacific, which are home to an estimated 2.7 billion people.

The member countries collaborate on shared economic, environmental and democratic goals, while the British monarch serves symbolically as the Head of the Commonwealth.

Sports Program

The Games will feature a reduced 10-sport programme, including six fully integrated Para Sports.

The sports program includes:

• Artistic Gymnastics
• Athletics and Para Athletics (Track & Field)
• Bowls and Para Bowls
• Boxing
• Cycling Track and Para Cycling Track
• Judo
• Netball
• Swimming and Para Swimming
• Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting

Due to cost savings and the reduced timescale to organize the 2026 Games, 10 major sports were dropped from the sports program for Glasgow, including:

• Cricket (Twenty20)
• Field Hockey
• Rugby Sevens
• Badminton
• Squash
• Table Tennis
• Wrestling
• Diving
• Beach volleyball and non-track cycling
• Rhythmic Gymnastics

Venues

Across 11 days of competition, the Commonwealth Games 2026 will be delivered across four venues within a concentrated, eight-mile corridor:

The Scotstoun Stadium will be the venue for athletics and para athletics, featuring 12 sports sessions. Located in the West End of Glasgow on the Scotstoun Sports Campus, the stadium has a 400m outdoor track, while the campus previously hosted the squash and table competitions at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Tollcross International Swimming Centre will be home to 12 sports sessions across swimming and para swimming. Opened in 1997, Tollcross has a competition-standard 50m pool and additional warmup and training pools, and has previously hosted the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 2015 World Para Swimming Championships, 2018 European Aquatics Championships and 2019 European Short Course Championships.

Home of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Arena, the Glasgow International Arena will be the home of the track cycling, para track cycling and artistic gymnastics events in 2026. Opened in October 2012 as a purpose-built venue for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the arena in Dalmarnock in the East End of Glasgow previously also hosted the badminton competition 12 years ago.

The Scottish Event Campus (SEC) features the SEC Centre, five interconnected exhibition and meeting spaces, the SEC Armadillo and the Hydro (a concert, sporting and special events arena). In total, the Campus will welcome six sports in 2026: netball, weightlifting and para powerlifting, 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball, bowls and para bowls, boxing and judo.

Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The Hydro on the Scottish Event Campus will be the host venue for the Commonwealth Games 2026 Opening Ceremony on July 23, marking the first time in the event’s history that such a Ceremony will be staged indoors.

The Opening Ceremony has been curated by Louisa Mahon, Glasgow 2026’s overall creative lead for Ceremonies, with support from Show and Staging Director Roxana Cole, Choreographer Emily-Jane Boyle and Costume Designer Carole Millar.

The same venue will also be home to the Closing Ceremony on August 2. So far, Scottish rock band Simple Minds and Australian singer Delta Goodrem are among the performers confirmed for the Ceremony on the final day of competition.

Tickets

Tickets first went on sale for the Commonwealth Games 2026 in October 2025, and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis at the event website.

According to the website’s information at the time of writing, tickets remain available for all sports events at the Games, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Future Editions

Victoria’s withdrawal from hosting duties this summer is part of a worrying emerging trend for the Commonwealth Games. In recent years, more designated host cities and nations have pulled away from their responsibilities as a result of escalating costs and struggles to prepare their sports infrastructure in a dedicated timescale.

This is the second Games in a row a different city needed to step in as hosts (after Birmingham, UK, took over from Durban, South Africa, in 2022), and there will be pressure on Ahmedabad, India, to deliver in 2030, especially as it is bidding to host the 2036 Olympic Summer Games.

There are also doubts over which countries will continue as member countries of the Commonwealth. Ireland is the only country to have ever permanently withdrawn from the Commonwealth of Nations in 1949, although the likes of South Africa, the Gambia, Pakistan, Fiji and the Maldives have left before later rejoining.

Meanwhile, other nations are considering renouncing King Charles III as their head of state (e.g. Jamaica, Belize and Antigua and Barbuda) and moving to republic status, although they are expected to remain in the broader Commonwealth.

Glasgow has proved it can deliver successful Commonwealth Games before. The next 11 days will show whether it can deliver a scaled-down Games in such a short timeframe.
