NFL Training Camp: Where All 32 Teams Will Prepare for the 20206 Season

The NFL is back.

By Tuesday, about a week after players began arriving, all 32 of the league’s teams will have fully opened training camp for both rookies and veterans. (Two teams — the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers — officially started training camp last week because they will play in the Hall of Fame Game on August 6.)

Only six of those teams will do so at a facility that is not part of their team headquarters: the Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers, all of which will all be back at the same facilities they were in a year ago. And this summer, the New York Giants will join them in hitting the road.

The Giants, who on Monday announced plans to expand and renovate their headquarters and practice facility, will spend camp at Greenbrier Resort Sports Performance Center in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Big Blue is not the first NFL team to take country roads to Greenbrier for camp; the Houston Texans and New Orleans Saints have also trained there. This is a season of new beginnings for the Giants, who welcome a new coach in John Harbaugh, the longtime leader of the Baltimore Ravens, as they seek to return to the playoffs after a three-year absence.

New York’s NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, have become almost as synonymous with their training camp location as they are with their home city. For the 20th year in a row, the Cowboys will train in Oxnard, California, where practices are free and open to the public, and where Visit Oxnard is making sure the thousands of dedicated fans of America’s Team who come to town will know exactly where to go and what to do.

While the NFL once resembled Major League Baseball in that its teams went away from their home cities for a scaled-down experience with a more intimate fan setting, in recent years that has become the exception rather than the rule.

In 2000, only five NFL teams prepared for the season within 10 miles of their home venue. By 2013 that number was up to 19, and the trend has only accelerated from there. (In 2020, Commissioner Roger Goodell told teams they had to stay home due to the COVID pandemic.) Organizations prioritize modern facilities — think spacious meeting rooms, film rooms, weight rooms, hot and cold tubs, practice fields — and the familiarity and technology they provide rather than “roughing it” in small towns and college dorms that were believed to foster team-building and gave players a fresh perspective before the long season ahead.

There is also, of course, the chance to make more money. More fans can pay to attend practices at existing NFL facilities and team headquarters than at small colleges, such as Olivet Nazarene Univsrsity in Bourbonnais, Illinois, where the Chicago Bears trained from 2002-2019, or Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where the Philadelphia Eagles trained from 1996-2012, to name just two.

In 2027, the Indianapolis Colts will join the list of teams that stay home to get ready for the season in their luxurious (and corporate-sponsored) headquarters. But this summer, they will be back at Grand Park, located in Westfield, Indiana, roughly 40 minutes from Lucas Oil Stadium, just as they have since 2018. That venue features 400 acres and more than 25 baseball and softball diamonds, and more than 30 multi-purpose fields for soccer, football and lacrosse. And for one more summer, it will feature an NFL team.
