Greg Easton, an American whose family has been synonymous with the sport of archery, was elected the 10th president of World Archery during the international federation’s 56th Congress in Gwangju, South Korea.
Easton, who father James was president of the organization from 1989 to 2005, was elected in a two-candidate race with World Archery Secretary General Tom Dielen. He received 206 votes to the 96 of Dielen and will serve a four-year term. Ugur Erdener reached the constitutional term limit after serving 20 years in the role.
“Yesterday I asked you to join me on this journey,” Easton said. “I want to thank you for joining me. I think together we can make some great changes here at World Archery and improve our sport and build on the great foundation that both Tom and Dr Erdener created for us. I would like to thank Tom for all of his service. I don’t think this takes away from all his has done and what he can still do for this sport.”
Easton is the second American to be elected to head an international federation in the past year-plus. Rob Stull was elected president of the International Modern Pentathlon Union in November 2024, a four-year tenure that includes the 2028 Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles.
Easton had been on the executive board at the organization from 2013 until stepping down in September 2022. During his candidature for president, Easton’s website said “if elected, I will not take the remuneration associated with the role” while laying his vision for World Archery going forward. And in an interview with Francs Jeux website, he made reference to the road to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
“An incredible amount of work has been done,” Easton told the site. “However, we need to redouble our efforts to deliver the best possible product to our athletes and fans. Our Olympic relevance remains strong, especially with the inclusion of the compound mixed team event in Los Angeles in 2028. However, I understand the need to make our events more engaging and immersive, both for athletes and spectators.”
Easton is chairman of the board and has been president at the Easton Foundation since 2011, which oversees Easton Archery and Hoyt Archery based in Salt Lake City. He is a board member of the National Field Archery Association Foundation and the Utah Sports Commission. He was also president of the USA Archery Foundation from 2014 through 2022.
“On behalf of USA Archery, I congratulate Greg Easton on his election as President of World Archery,” said USA Archery CEO Rod Menzer. “Greg’s deep passion for our sport and lifelong commitment to its growth will serve the global archery community well. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of his leadership on the continued development and visibility of archery worldwide.”
