Loudoun to Host U.S. Figure Skating’s 2027 National Solo Dance Final
The 2027 National Solo Dance Final will take place September 16—19
Posted On: July 30, 2026 By :The Washington Figure Skating Club has won the bid to host the 2027 National Solo Dance Final at Ashburn Ice House in Loudoun County, Virginia.
The event will take place September 16—19, with September 15 set aside as a practice day.
“We are honored to have been selected to host the 2027 final,” said Heather Nemier, president of the Washington Figure Skating Club. “The club has a long history of hosting figure skating competitions in the Washington, D.C., area, and we look forward to welcoming solo ice dancers to Ashburn. Solo dance is one of the fastest-growing disciplines within U.S. Figure Skating. There is a large and growing community of solo dancers in this area, including two reigning national champions in Ariel Running (Juvenile) and Violet Yan (Junior).”
Founded in 1938, the Washington Figure Skating Club is one of the oldest such clubs in the United States. One of its most recognized members is Olympic and World Champion figure skater Ilia Malinin, a 20206 Olympic Winter Games gold medalist and four-time U.S. national champion, while three other club members were alternates for the 2026 U.S. Olympic Team.

Qualification for the Finals
With two NHL-sized ice rinks and seating capacity for spectators, Ashburn Ice House has been a regional hub for figure skating and youth and adult hockey leagues since opening in Loudoun in 1998. More than 220 skaters from ages seven and up are expected to take part in the 2027 finals, and there could be as many as 12 Loudoun skaters competing.
To qualify for the Finals, ice dancers will have to compete in a series of regional competitions in the East, Midwest or Pacific West Coast regions between March and August 2027. There are three different types of events in the competition itself and up to eight levels within each category, meaning there will be as many as 21 competition events.
While solo ice dancing has been a recognized sport for many years, competitive solo ice dancing only started officially 15 years ago. It is also one of the only internationally recognized skating events in which male and female skaters compete against each other.
