Civic leaders in Macon, Georgia, last week unveiled renderings of the proposed Macon Arena, a multi-purpose campus located on the East Bank of the Ocmulgee River.
The building has a projected cost of $350 million and capacity of roughly 10,000 depending on the event. Plans call for construction to conclude in the summer of 2028 and the first events to take place that fall.
The complex will include a 30,000-square-foot flex hall adjacent to the 250,000-square-foot main arena, as well as premium hospitality spaces. Adding flex hall space will take capacity for concerts to more than 12,000 while championship volleyball and basketball events will be able to seat more than 11,000.
The flex hall will also allow for community programming and allow multiple events to take place at the same time.
“This project gives Macon another important tool as we continue to compete for conventions, meetings, events, sports tournaments, and entertainment opportunities,” said Gary Wheat, president & CEO of Visit Macon. “A modern arena campus with flexible event space helps us tell a stronger story to planners who are looking for destinations that can meet a wide variety of needs. It is an investment not only in tourism, but in the long-term economic activity and quality of life for Macon-Bibb County.”
This project represents the largest bond expenditure in Macon-Bibb County history. Groundbreaking is expected to happen this summer and it will be located on the site of the current Macon Coliseum, which opened in 1968 and will remain open during construction. The Coliseum will then be demolished once the new facility is completed.
Macon is located roughly 85 miles south of Atlanta.
