Sumo Championship League to Host First Event in Austin
Two other events in SCL's debut season will be held in Chicago and Ontario, California
Posted On: August 26, 2026 By :Sumo Championship League has announced the first three stops of its inaugural season.
The new professional sumo league will debut in the Austin area, with an October 10 event at the nearby H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. Competition continues November 7 at Chicago’s Credit Union 1 Arena, and the league will close out the year with a December 19 event at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.
Additional sites for SCL events in 2027 will be announced at a later date.
“We couldn’t be more excited to launch the Sumo Championship League in Austin, a city known for its passionate sports fans and electric atmosphere,” said Stuart Snyder, chairman and CEO of Sumo Championship League. “We can’t wait to welcome fans to an unforgettable night of action and spectacle and begin a new lasting tradition in Austin.”
What to Expect from SCL
SCL events will feature sumo wrestling between two heavyweight wrestlers in the ring, also known as dohyō. Top-ranked competitors will vie for wins, prize money and position in the league’s championship standings.
The goal of sumo wrestling is to force your opponent out of the ring or off his feet. SCL looks to introduce new audiences to sumo by blending the sport’s rich Japanese origins with a modern league structure.
The league’s first event at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park aims to introduce high-level competition, rivalries, traditions and pageantry to a fresh audience.
“This event showcases the growing appeal of international sports and entertainment, and we’re honored that the Sumo Championship League has chosen H-E-B Center at Cedar Park as a destination for its inaugural event,” said Darren Olsen, vice president of booking at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. “Bringing athletes of this caliber to our venue provides a rare opportunity for fans to experience the excitement, athleticism and cultural significance of professional sumo competition firsthand.”
Sumo Championship League’s First Season Scheduled for 2026–2027
SCL announced its official launch earlier this year with the goal of growing professional sumo wrestling in the United States. The league aims to attract audiences in the United States through a touring model, with the season running through 2027.
SCL will feature season-long rankings and professional competition, concluding with the first SCL Annual Championship in late 2027.
The league’s long-term goal is to expand internationally by building upon a worldwide interest in sumo wrestling. More than 85 countries have organized amateur sumo events.
