Q&A: Stuart Snyder, CEO of Sumo Championship League

Earlier this year, it was announced that Sumo Championship League, a new professional sumo league built for all audiences, would formally launch this fall in the United States.

SCL will debut in the Austin area, with an October 10 event at the nearby H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. Competition continues November 7 at Chicago’s Credit Union 1 Arena, and the league will close out the year with a December 19 event at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.

Built around season-long rankings, wrestlers will compete throughout the year for standings, prize money, and championship positioning, culminating in the first SCL Annual Championship in late 2027 that will feature the league’s top-ranked competitors. Its inaugural roster features 45 athletes from nine countries who will compete in the first season, including established champions, national titleholders, and emerging competitors from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, and Georgia.

Combining one of the world’s oldest sports traditions with a modern professional league structure, SCL is seeking to grow professional sumo wrestling in the United States through a touring model. In the longer term, it aims to expand to more international markets.

SportsTravel spoke to Sumo Championship League CEO Stuart Snyder to get the lowdown on the league’s launch and its future strategy. Snyder is the former president and COO of both World Wrestling Entertainment and the animation, young kids and adult media division of Tuner Broadcasting System.

ST: Why is now the right time to launch a professional sumo league?

SS: The timing is ideal. Combat sports and live entertainment continue to grow globally, audiences increasingly want authentic competition paired with compelling authentic drama, and digital media has created a growing demand for visually dynamic sports content. Sumo already has worldwide recognition and cultural relevance, but no one has built a modern professional league structure around it for today’s audiences. That’s the opportunity we see. We also believe fans are increasingly looking for unique live-event experiences, which creates an opportunity to introduce professional sumo to new audiences through a recurring live-event experience.

ST: What demographics are you most keen to attract?

SS: We see strong potential across several audiences. Sumo appeals to sports fans because the competition is authentic and easy to understand. There is also tremendous crossover potential with combat sports audiences, fans seeking new experiences, and families looking for unique live-event entertainment. We are also creating a family-friendly sports spectacle due to the honor, tradition, and respectful nature of sumo wrestling.

ST: Which host cities/destinations are you looking to partner with and why?

SS: We plan to tour major U.S. markets initially. Right now, the focus is on building the strongest possible launch schedule and live-event experience. We’re looking for markets that value live sports, distinctive live-event experiences, and community engagement. Because SCL is designed as a recurring touring league, we see opportunities to build long-term relationships with venues, destination partners, and host cities that want to bring something distinctive to their event calendars.

Our approach is to begin in venues seating approximately 3,000 to 7,000, creating full, energetic arenas where audiences feel close to the action and part of the experience. The goal is to create the best possible fan experience and atmosphere while introducing new audiences to professional sumo.

ST: What potential do you see for sumo to grow outside of Japan?

SS: We believe the potential is significant. Sumo already has worldwide recognition, and elite athletes compete around the world today. Amateur sumo competitions are organized in more than 85 countries worldwide, demonstrating the sport’s existing global reach. While the initial launch is focused on the United States, SCL is designed to be an international sports property from day one. The athletes will come from around the world, and we absolutely see opportunities for international touring and expansion over time.

ST: What are your ultimate ambitions for the league? How can you continue to promote, grow, and fund this?

SS: Our vision is to establish professional sumo as a recurring arena sport and media property while honoring the heritage and authentic competition that make the sport unique. Success in the first few years means building awareness, creating a loyal fan base, establishing recurring live events, developing recognizable athletes, and proving that professional sumo can become a sustainable, long-term professional sports league. Over time, we see opportunities for expanded touring, additional host markets, media distribution, sponsorship growth, and international expansion. Like other professional sports properties, the business model is diversified across ticket sales, sponsorships, media rights, merchandise, licensing, and partnerships.

ST: Sumo has never been a medal sport in the Olympics. Do you foresee a future for it in the Games?

SS: Our focus right now is on building Sumo Championship League and growing awareness of authentic professional sumo through recurring live events, athlete development, and audience growth. More broadly, we believe there is a global appetite for the sport.

Helping expand awareness of sumo introduces the sport to new audiences around the world and creates more opportunities for athletes to compete at the highest level. Our immediate priority is building a sustainable professional league and creating more opportunities for athletes and fans to engage with the sport.
