Ted Keith, a veteran of both Sports Illustrated and Sports Business Journal, has joined SportsTravel as its new managing editor. He will be based at his home in North Carolina.
Starting in 2018, Keith most recently served as an assistant managing editor at Sports Business Journal, where he oversaw all editorial coverage related to pro football, baseball, hockey, soccer, the Olympics and sports entertainment, among other beats. He conceived and launched several popular editorial initiatives, including the Year-End Awards and the magazine’s State of Play page, and also directed coverage of major programs such as “Lifetime Achievement Award” and served as the editorial point of contact for sponsored content.
Prior to SBJ, Keith spent 15 years at Sports Illustrated, first as a writer and reporter at SI For Kids and later as a staff writer, associate editor and senior editor at SI.com and also as a senior editor at the weekly magazine, where his duties included running the iconic Scorecard section.
Keith, a native and longtime resident of the New York metropolitan area, has extensive experience appearing on television and radio, and hosted three podcasts at SI and was a frequent host of the Morning Buzzcast podcast at SBJ. In addition to guiding content around SBJ’s events, for the past five years has served as moderator of the Sports & Entertainment Summit at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
At SportsTravel, Keith will plan and execute original editorial coverage, including feature stories, news items, newsletters and sponsored content. He will host the SportsTravel Podcast and webinar series and be a frequent guest at Northstar Meetings Group sports division events, including the TEAMS Conference & Expo and EsportsTravel Summit, as well as other industry events.
“We are thrilled to have Ted join our team and lead our editorial efforts at SportsTravel,” said Jason Gewirtz, vice president and managing director of the Northstar Meetings Group Sports Division and publisher of SportsTravel. “Ted’s extensive sports media background at some of the industry’s leading brands gives him an immediate head start and allows us and our audience to tap into his considerable expertise. We’re excited for him to meet members of our industry and for him to become a trusted source for industry leaders to share their important stories. He will be a key part of our growth plans moving forward both at SportsTravel and at our industry-leading events.”
“I’m excited to join SportsTravel and the Northstar Meetings Group,” Keith said. “This is a transformative period for sports and sports tourism in the United States and globally, and I’m eager to get to know even more of the people who are making it happen.”
Keith lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where his favorite activity is spending time with his wife and their two sports-loving sons and equally energetic golden retriever. In addition to cheering on the Tar Heels, he enjoys traveling (including a slow quest to take his kids to every MLB stadium) and is active in his community. He still plays softball and pickup basketball, in addition to bike riding and exercising, and has been fortunate to not suffer any major injuries (yet).
International Editorial Team
Keith rounds out a new international editorial team at SportsTravel that includes the recent hiring of Paul Stevens as senior editor, based in the United Kingdom. Stevens is the magazine’s first international-based editor and will contribute coverage both internationally and within the United States.
“Ted and Paul represent the sports-event industry’s largest full-time editorial staff and I can’t wait to see everything we can accomplish as the sports industry continues to become more integrated around the world,” Gewirtz said. “With some of the world’s largest sports events headed to the United States in the years to come, this is an incredible time to tell the stories that matter the most and to keep industry leaders informed on a daily basis through our ongoing coverage.”
