What started out as merely a soccer tournament for 13 national teams in 1930 has become a global phenomenon with 48 teams, and organizers now see the FIFA World Cup as a significant tourism driver for their local and national economies.
Almost a century later, as the United States, Canada and Mexico prepare to welcome fans from around the world for the largest FIFA World Cup in history, host committees have been working hard on plans to create unique activations to entertain visitors to their destinations. From fan festivals to live match viewings to cultural programming, these plans can be just as crucial as the games themselves to driving more money back into the local communities.
Since the first official FIFA Fan Festivals were inaugurated back in South Korea and Japan in 2002, these activations have grown more elaborate, and often extend well beyond the stadia themselves. Organizers are finding even more imaginative ways to appeal to World Cup visitors. Here are some of the most eye-catching activities on offer this summer:
Seattle: Float Away
Seattle Soccer Celebration is being described as a “floating waterfront experience” on Elliott Bay at Pier 62 in downtown Seattle.
Hosted by Seattle Sounders FC, Seattle Reign FC and RAVE Foundation, and powered by Lenovo, the barge celebration will include a floating mini-pitch, waterfront watch parties, a large LED screen and music, as well as F&B offerings from across the city.
From June 11 through July 6, fans — in particular young people from underserved communities — will be able to access free and public watch party programming at Waterfront Park at Pier 6.
Registration for Seattle Soccer Celebration begins on June 2.
Miami: Royal Caribbean
- The FIFA Fan Festival Miami at Bayfront Park across 23 days, featuring live broadcasts of all matches on large screens, live entertainment, local food and immersive brand activations
- “Dynamic branding” at well-known landmarks across Miami
Dallas: #IfThenSheCan Statue Exhibit
In collaboration with the North Texas FWC Organizing Committee, Lyda Hill Philanthropies’ IF/THEN Initiative will debut #IfThenSheCan — The Exhibit: Game Changers, a display of 26 life-size, 3-D printed statues celebrating leaders whose work demonstrates how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fuel the world of sports.
The free interactive exhibit will be on public display from June 11 through July 19 at the Fan Festival in Dallas’ Fair Park, located at 3809 Grand Avenue. It will coincide with the full World Cup, allowing fans to enjoy free live match screenings, food, music and entertainment.
Among the Game Changers are USWNT legend Julie Foudy, former Dallas Mavericks president Cynt Marshall and Dr. Colleen M. Hacker, whose work spans fields ranging from elite athletic performance and sports medicine to data analytics, stadium engineering, biomechanics and fan technology. The installation is designed to shine a light on the STEM careers that drive elite performance in the global sports industry today.
It marks the second iteration of the IF/THEN statue exhibit. The first exhibit in 2021 featured 120 statues of contemporary women in STEM, with pop-up installations in locations such as the Central Park Zoo, Dallas Love Field Airport and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
