The Henrico Sports & Events Center sports and entertainment complex held its formal opening this week as the former Virginia Center Commons mall property has been turned into a $50 million, 185,000-square-foot venue for tournaments and more.
Built through a partnership between Henrico and Rebkee County, the complex began hosting tournaments and other events in late October. The facility features an arena that can accommodate more than 3,500 fans, as well as event space that can be configured for 12 basketball courts or 24 volleyball courts simultaneously.
“We are very pleased with the progress, as 90-plus organizations have already scheduled 46 weekends through 2024, including tournaments, practices, meetings and other events,” said Will Berryman, general manager of the venue. “It’s great to see just how excited the community and surrounding region is to utilize this new center and we were fortunate to experience it in person at the grand opening event. We truly look forward to continuing the momentum and success here.”
Managed by the Henrico Sports & Entertainment Authority and ASM Global, the facility opened its doors to the public with appearances by Henrico Board Chairman Frank J. Thornton and other county officials. The Atlantic 10 Conference has already announced a partnership with the Henrico Sports & Entertainment Authority to bring the 2024 and 2025 A-10 Women’s Basketball Championships to the center.
“We’re thrilled to open the doors to this beautiful new facility,” said Dennis Bickmeier, executive director of the Henrico Sports & Entertainment Authority. “The Henrico Sports & Events Center is already boosting our economy with sports tourism, providing great opportunities for our local athletes and enhancing our quality of life by providing great entertainment for our entire community.”
