The UTMB World Series has added the new Rothrock by UTMB to its circuit, the series’ second event in the Eastern United States alongside Grindstone Running Festival by UTMB in Virginia. The inaugural Rothrock by UTMB is scheduled for May 16–17, 2026, near State College, Pennsylvania, bringing the UTMB World Series to Rothrock State Forest for the first time.
The distance race will feature 50km and 25km competition. The new event will build on the history of the Rothrock Trail Challenge, which was established in 2009 and has grown into a rugged, community-driven race attracting runners from around the country. The 25K course will continue to follow the Rothrock Trail Challenge route. UTMB World Series will partner with the previous Rothrock race management team to execute the new event.
“We are excited to welcome runners to the wilds of Pennsylvania and offer an experience like none other, that is rugged, raw, and uniquely beautiful,” said Meira Minard, co-race director for the Rothrock by UTMB. “With more than 95,000 acres, the Rothrock State Forest offers an amazing diverse challenge due to its beautiful scenery and mountainous terrain with an unforgettable climb up Tussey Mountain. We are proud to combine these epic courses with the incredible UTMB World Series experience and showcase just what makes this area so special this coming May.”
“We are thrilled to continue the legacy of Rothrock by UTMB, to carry forward this journey, and to collaborate closely with the local teams,” said Florian Lamblin, executive director of UTMB International. “This new collaboration will allow to bring the very best of the UTMB World Series experience while celebrating the unique landscapes, trails, and communities of Rothrock. We can’t wait to offer runners an unforgettable adventure in a region that truly embodies the spirit of trail running and community.”
As part of the event, organizers plan to give back over $40,000 to the greater Rothrock community over the next three years, which will be awarded as community grants to local nonprofits that nurture outdoor recreation and protect trails and natural spaces.
The race will join a calendar of over 60 trail events worldwide and marks the 12th event in North America.
“Rothrock by UTMB represents a tremendous opportunity to drive new economic activity while showcasing the strength of our outdoor community,” said Eric Engelbarts, executive director of the Happy Valley Sports & Entertainment Alliance. “Events of this caliber help elevate the overall experience for residents and visitors and reinforce Happy Valley’s position as a premier destination. We are proud to welcome athletes who will contribute to the vitality of our region.”
Priority registration for Rothrock by UTMB will open on December 9, with general registration beginning December 11 at rothrock.utmb.world/register.
