Virginia Sung Remaining as CEO of USA Table Tennis Through 2030

Virginia Sung will remain CEO of USA Table Tennis through 2030 as part of a new agreement, according to an announcement from Kelly Watson, the chairperson for the board of directors for USATT.

Sung joined USATT as CEO in 2019.

“This job has humbled me, challenged me, and given me some of the proudest moments of my life,” Sung wrote on LinkedIn. “Through the tough moments and the wins—I’d choose it every time. So grateful to keep serving the sport I love so much, and working alongside those who share the same dream and mission. This community, this sport, the Olympic movement, and all of you… my heart is all in.”

She also serves as an executive vice president for the International Table Tennis Federation.

“Over the past six years, Virginia has helped elevate the sport of table tennis in the U.S. by bringing the first-ever World Championships to American soil, ending a 62-year medal drought at the event, and securing major sponsors for our premier competitions,” Watson said in the message. “She has also strengthened support for our clubs, elite athletes, tournament organizers, and members which has led to unprecedented growth and increased visibility of the sport.”

According to Watson, USATT “nearly tripled its net assets and significantly increased its cash reserves” while nearly doubling its membership.

Sung has also played a key role in restoring USATT’s financial health and organizational structure.  During her tenure, USATT has nearly tripled its net assets and significantly increased its cash reserves.  And our membership has nearly doubled.  Virginia’s business acumen, leadership, and strategic vision ensure that USATT has the capacity and stability to continue to grow and thrive.

Sung is a member of the USOPC board.

The U.S. has never won an Olympic medal in table tennis, which first became a medal sport in 1988. China has dominated, winning 66 medals, more than all other nations combined.
