Sports ETA Seeks Destination Data for State of the Industry Report

The Sports Events and Tourism Association, in collaboration with the Northstar Meetings Group, has engaged Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics company, to conduct an update of the 2019 State of the Industry Report that will look at the industry’s performance in 2020 and 2021. The study will provide strategic insights on market size, economic impact, competitive dynamics, and trends within the industry and destinations are being asked to contribute economic data to help gauge the state of the industry.

In 2019, Sports ETA’s survey concluded that the sports-related travel market was worth $45 billion in direct spending and generated $103.3 billion in direct, indirect and induced business sales. It was considered the high-water mark for the industry before the pandemic caused a downturn in the number of events and economic generated through sports. With results from 2020 and 2021, the survey is designed to provide destinations, event organizers and industry suppliers with a better understanding of how well the recovery is going within the world of sports tourism.

The survey is designed specifically for destination representatives and takes about 15 minutes to complete. Destinations are asked to have their budget, event, sponsorship, participation, and spending data readily available to complete the survey. Only one response per organization is required, with responses kept confidential and results reported in aggregate.

Responses to the survey are due by February 11.

Survey results will be released during the 2022 Sports ETA Annual Symposium in Fort Worth, Texas, May 2­­–5.
