U.S. Open Preview: Accessibility, Innovation and Renovation

It has been a summer to remember for New Yorkers. The New York Knicks won their first NBA Championship in more than 50 years, MetLife Stadium in neighboring New Jersey hosted a FIFA World Cup Final, and now the fourth and final tennis Grand Slam of the year is back in Queens with unprecedented scale.

Over three weeks from August 23 through September 13, all eyes will be on Flushing Meadows for the 2026 U.S. Open. The annual tournament is one of the highest revenue-generating, multiday events in US sports, generating approximately $559.7 million and bringing in more than $1.2 billion to the city each year, according to the United States Tennis Association, as 800,000-plus fans visit and spend money on accommodation, restaurants, transportation, shopping, and entertainment.

This year’s edition will feature record prize pools and enhanced hospitality offerings, but organizers are also exploring how to make the tournament more accessible and innovative than ever in hopes of attracting new fans to the sport.

Flushing Meadows Renovations

An $800 million multi-phase renovation (self-funded by the USTA) is on track at Arthur Ashe Stadium and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, with work expected to reach completion by next summer’s tournament.

Among the key changes: courtside seating at Arthur Ashe Stadium is being increased from 3,000 to 5,000 seats through an upward extension of the arena’s lower bowl; concourses and promenade spaces are being expanded to improve fan movement between the main show courts; and the interior of the arena below the mezzanine has been rebuilt with updated restrooms and new direct escalators to promenade areas.

The U.S. Open has also rebranded its hospitality program as U.S. Open Premier, offering different packages with luxury suites, premium clubs, and courtside experiences. Options include The Blue Room (previously the Aces Restaurant), The Club (dedicated chef services), The Overlook (offering retreats, as well as premium liquor and signature cocktails), Courtside Signature (personalized service), On Court Experience and Play Like a Pro (active play and private hitting sessions), Westside Box, and 100 and 200 Level Luxury Suites.

The updates come with a view to completing the three-phase redevelopment of all facilities in time for the 2027 US Open, including the opening of a new player performance center.

Record Prize Money

Starting this year,  the U.S. Open will offer the largest prize fund in Grand Slam history. The total prize pool will be worth $108 million — the first time it has exceeded $100 million and a 20 percent increase over last year — with the male and female singles’ champions each pocketing $5.5 million.

The prize pool also includes a $2 million contribution to a welfare fund, which leading players have been demanding at all four annual Grand Slams.

In addition, a Grand Slam Player Council has been established to serve as the forum for direct communication, feedback and collaboration between the Grand Slam event organizers and the players. Players are calling for each Grand Slam to dedicate 16 percent of its revenues to their respective prize pools, and some limited their media appearances at this year’s French Open and Wimbledon to highlight their demands.

USTA Chief Executive Craig Tiley said that the offer represented a “significant first step in multi-year investment in athletes.”

Discounted Tickets

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the USTA announced that 1,000 discounted tickets to the U.S. Open were being made available.

New York City residents can buy up to two tickets at $100 each to Main Draw singles matches from August 30 through September 8, including seats in Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium, as well as grounds passes.

It follows a similar initiative by Mayor Mamdani during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when New York citizens were able to purchase 1,000 World Cup tickets for $50 each. The administration said that the announcements were a commitment to making major sporting events accessible to all New Yorkers.

Technology and Activations

Alongside a series of fan experiences and activations across New York City during the U.S. Open, the USTA and longstanding official partner IBM announced three new, enhanced AI-powered innovations to help fans experience the event in a more personalized way.

• A new Serve Quality metric, available across all 254 singles matches, uses limb-tracking technology (developed with AI-powered development partner IBM Bob) to help analyze the precise mechanics of every serve.
• Key Moments takes the existing, live Likelihood to Win feature a step further, calculating each player’s probability of victory using an AI-powered analysis of current and historical statistics, expert opinion, and match momentum.
• Enhanced Match Chat acts as an interactive companion throughout each match, letting fans ask questions in their own words to get instant, conversational answers.

It comes as a new global survey from Morning Consult and commissioned by IBM was released, revealing that 91 percent of global tennis fans surveyed use sports apps during events.

“It is really about enhancing the fan experience, from casual fans to statisticians who want to really get in the game, and we think they will enjoy having a new way to look at it,” said Kristi Kolski, sports & entertainment partnerships director at IBM. “It’s also going to be a new resource for players and coaches alike, and in many ways, it democratizes the data as it gives players more access to insights. There is a natural skepticism around AI, but we feel very confident because we are working with the USTA’s trusted data, so the quality is an important thing for IBM.

“Every year, we’re trying to learn, iterate, and raise the bar, including taking learnings from different clients and other events (e.g. the Masters at Augusta). Personalization is important for every industry right now, and people don’t want generic experiences — sports fans expect that level of detail as well.”

Mixed Doubles Championship Format

For the second consecutive year, the U.S. Open began with a revamped Mixed Doubles Championship that took place throughout Fan Week and served as a standalone competition from the rest of the event.

Eight teams earned direct entry into the mixed doubles due to their combined singles rankings, while eight teams were granted wildcard entries.

In recent years, doubles competitions at Grand Slams have been the subject of much debate. The ATP in particular has pushed to reduce the format on tour due to perceived dwindling viewership figures. However, the Mixed Doubles Championship is designed to bring more attention and prestige back to the format, and top-ranked players were enticed to take part with an increased prize pool of $2.88 million.

Matches took place in prime time and in front of crowds of 10,000 or more spectators, giving juice to a competition that needed it.

On August 26, Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik won the title, defeating Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli, the pair that had eliminated the Serena Williams/Carlos Alcaraz tandem in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, the singles draw will get underway on a Sunday for the first time (August 30), aligning the start time with the formats used at the Australian and French Opens.
